Little Susitna River, Alaska Fishing
Little Susitna River, Alaska Fishing
The Little Susitna River has two primary access points for the roadside fisherman. The Little Susitna Public Use Facility (LSPUF) and the Parks Highway bridge crossing. The LSPUF provides king salmon fishing via boat, or by foot both up and downriver from the facility. There are several good holes to catch kings, silvers, chum and pink salmon from the bank via foot access both up and down river from the LSPUF. Silver fishing can be good at the Parks Highway bridge crossing.
Accomodations Rating: Nice. Facilities include for fee RV camping, restrooms, and a boat launch.
Access: Easy to moderate. A short walk provides easy access to the first foot accessible king and silver salmon fishing hole on a well used trail. The better fishing requires more moderate hikes on less used trails.
Crowds: Light. Although considerable boat traffic, including guides use this area, bank fishermen experience light crowds even during the peak of the king run.
LITTLE SUSITNA RIVER, ALASKA FISH AND FISHING RATINGS:
King Salmon (Chinook) Fishing Rating: Fishing Rating: Worthwhile to Good. If you fish the Parks Highway during king salmon season, the Little Susitna River at the LSPUF is a spot to do some exploring and catch some kings before heading further north. Fishing Techniques: People cast spinners, spoons, drift corkies and yarn, and fish flies. We believe the most productive technique for catching king salmon in this clear water river is to fly-fish, or drift fish flies.
Silver Samon (Coho) Fishing Rating: Decent to Good. During the main silver salmon run in late July to mid-August, the Little Sustina offers good fishing for silvers both at the LSPUF and also at the Parks Highway bridge crossing. Fishing Techniques for silvers in the Little Susitna River include casting spinners and spoons, flies, and fishing eggs.
Red Salmon (Sockeye) Fishing Rating: Not Good. Although the Little Susitna supports all five species of Pacific salmon, we do not consider it a good sockeye fishery.
Pink Samon Fishing Rating: Decent to Good. During even numbered years ie., (2008, 2010, 2012) pinks can be fun fishing from the LSPUF. Fishing Techniques for pink salmon on the Little Susitna River: Casting spinners and spoons such as pixies, blue fox, or vibrax is the most effective technique for pinks.
Chum Salmon Fishing Rating: Decent to Good. Chum salmon are present about the same time as the silvers. Fishing Techniques for chum in the Little Susitna River include: Small flies and eggs are the most effective techniques, but some chum are also caught using spinners and spoons.
Rainbow Trout Fishing Rating: Worthwhile. Rainbows are present in the Little Susitna River year round and can usually be caught if targeted during salmon seasons.
