Eklutna Tailrace, Alaska Fishing
The Eklutna Tailrace is hatchery salmon fishery. People do catch kings here and even more silvers. One of the best features is the close proximity to Anchorage, only about 34 miles. As the king runs continue to develop, this fishery may improve. Like most fishing spots, there are several specific locations that produce most of the fish.
Accomodations Rating: Decent. Free parking provides easy access to fishing the Eklutna.
Access: Easy. A short walk provides easy access to where the Eklutna joins the Knik River. You can fish either side of the tailrace. A foot bridge crossing the tailrace provides access to the opposite side. There are heavily used gravel and dirt paths on both sides. Foot trails through the brush provide additional access toward the upper end of the tailrace.
Crowds: Moderate. There is plenty of room to fish and the passive style of casting out and waiting allows for non-combat fishing.
EKLUTNA TAILRACE, ALASKA FISH AND FISHING RATINGS:
King Salmon (Chinook) Fishing Rating: Decent. King salmon are caught at the Elkutna Tailrace and the fishing should continue to improve as the hatchery fish continue to take hold. Fishing Techniques for king salmon at the Eklutna Tailrace include casting spinners and spoons, pond-style fishing corkies and hooks, but soaking eggs is by far the most productive technique.
Silver Samon (Coho) Fishing Rating: Decent to Good. Silver salmon fishing is best at the Eklutna Tailrace in early to mid-August. Fishing Techniques for silvers at Eklutna Tailrace include casting spinners and spoons, but soaking eggs is the most productive technique.
Pink Samon Fishing Rating: Not Good. During even numbered years ie., (2008, 2010, 2012) pinks can caught at the Eklutna Tailrace. Fishing Techniques for pinks at the Eklutna Tailrace: Casting spinners and spoons such as pixies, blue fox, or vibrax is the most effective technique.
Chum Salmon Fishing Rating: Not Good. Chum salmon are present at the Eklutna Tailrace in early August, but we would not consider it a first choice chum fishery. Fishing Techniques: Some chum are caught using spinners and spoons.
