Valdez, Alaska Fishing Information
Valdez Alaska on a clear day is one of the most scenic towns in Alaska! The drive from Glenallen down to Valdez is spectacular as well featuring snow capped mountains, glaciers, and magnificent water falls!
There are two primary ways to fish Valdez:
- Go to Allison Point and fish for pink salmon or silver (coho) salmon. In season, both provide incredible action from the bank!
- Hire a charter to take you fishing out toward where Prince William Sound meets the Gulf of Alaska. Tip: It's a long ride - hire a charter with a fast boat! Halibut, Rockfish, and Cod are the primary species targeted by charter boats. Charters out of Valdez also offer overnight trips for salmon shark.
Accomodations Rating: RV Parks.
Access: Easy. Hike down to the dock to meet your charter and go fishing for Halibut, Rockfish, and Cod for the day, or hire an overnight charter and go for salmon shark. Access to Allison Point is also easy. Park in the parking lot and hike down to the water and start casting into the schools of pinks or cohos (in season).
Crowds: Light - Moderate. There is plenty of space available to fish on Allison Point. Of course on a charter boat you will be with only the people you get on the boat with.

Silver Samon (Coho) Fishing Rating: Good to Really Good. During the last week of August through mid September, silver salmon fishing at Allison Point is very productive. It is the most popular bank fish in Valdez. Fishing Techniques for silvers at Allison Point, Valdez: Spinners and spoons, flies, and fishing eggs.
Pink Samon Fishing Rating: Outstanding. During the first three weeks in July, the pinks just boil off of Allison Point creating excellent catching opportunities! Halibut Fishing Rating: Good. The better fishing charters will put you on Halibut and bring you back in with your limit! The typical Valdez halibut ranges in size from 45 to 90 lbs, perfect eating size fish. Fishing Techniques out of Valdez: Cut bait, jigs.
Ling Cod Fishing Rating: Good. The better fishing charters will get you hooked up with ling while fishing for Halibut using the same fishing techniques. Average size: low 50 lb range.
Rock Fish Fishing Rating: Good. You will likely catch rock fish while fishing for halibut and ling cod using the same fishing techniques.
