Caswell Creek, Alaska Fishing

Caswell Creek is slightly tannic in color and is slough-like where it joins the Susitna River. Caswell Creek is open to king, silver, red, chum, and pink salmon fishing as well as for grayling, and rainbow trout.

Accomodations Rating: Primitive, but nice. There is nothing spectacular about the camping at Caswell Creek, but there are a number of RV accessible spots and in general it is a peaceful experience. Well off the main highway and not too crowded.

Access: Relatively Easy. There are stairs that make access to the Caswell Creek mouth relatively easy. A few hundred yard walk in all provides access from the parking lot/camping area to the confluence.

Crowds: Light. There are never many people fishing the confluence of Caswell Creek during king season.

CASWELL CREEK, ALASKA FISH AND FISHING RATINGS:

king salmonKing Salmon (Chinook) Fishing Rating: Not Good. If you fish the Parks Highway during king salmon season, there may be times when you will find kings holding at the mouth of Caswell Creek, but it has never been a good producer for us. People do seem to enjoy the atmosphere and when kings are present, catch fish. Fishing Techniques for kings at Caswell Creek: Pond-style corky fishing is the best way to catch kings at this fishing hole. Some people use spinners and spoons.

king salmonSilver Samon (Coho) Fishing Rating: Decent to Good. During the silver salmon season, the mouth of Caswell Creek can be a place to catch them. Fishing Techniques for silvers at Caswell Creek: Although silvers can be caught on spinners and spoons, soaking eggs it the best technique for this fishing hole.

king salmonRed Salmon (Sockeye) Fishing Rating: Not Good. Caswell Creek is not conducive to good sockeye salmon fishing. In general, areas with more current produce better catching opportunites. Fishing Techniques for sockeye salmon at Caswell Creek: Occassionally sockeye will hit spinners and spoons. Drifting yarn flies, or other sockeye salmon flies will also catch sockeye here when they are holding in good numbers.

king salmonPink Samon Fishing Rating: Decent to Good. During even numbered years ie., (2008, 2010, 2012) pinks can be present in large enough schools (during the peak of the runs) to make the fishing worthwhile at Caswell Creek. Fishing Techniques for pink salmon at Caswell Creek: Casting spinners and spoons such as pixies, blue fox, or vibrax is the most effective technique for pinks at this fishing hole.

king salmonChum Salmon Fishing Rating: Decent to Good. Chum salmon hold in fair numbers (during the peak of the runs) at the mouth of Caswell Creek. Fishing Techniques for chum at Caswell Creek: Small flies and eggs are the most effective techniques. Some chum are also caught using spinners and spoons.

king salmonRainbow Trout Fishing Rating: Not Good. Rainbows are present in Caswell Creek year round, but the best chance of catching them is ealry Fall.

king salmonGrayling Fishing Rating: Not Good. Grayling are present in Caswell Creek year round, but the best chance of catching them is ealry Fall.
